Data Fusion – new approach integrating LiDAR and geophysics

GIMOur interdisciplinary research team of geomorphologists and geoinformaticists has developed a novel approach for combining surface and subsurface geodata.

Exemplary case studies were carried out in the Dikti Mountains of East Crete, where karst landforms such as dolines and poljes were investigated through geophysics, terrestrial laser scanning and GIS. The outcomes provide first time integral insights into the structure of sinkholes. Geomophometric quantifications allow reconstructing the genesis and tracing the forming processes of karstic landforms in Crete. A complete overview of the methodology and the results has recently been published in the renowned international journal Earth Surface Processes and Landforms.

The outcomes were also visualised in a video that rose the interest of GIM International – an online source for geoinformatics.  The editors posted the new youtube channel of LiDAR point cloud flights on their main website.

Check out the video below. The youtube channel of LiDAR Research Group (Heidelberg University) can be accessed here.

Digital Geoarchaeology 2013 – conference website online

The official website of Digital Geoarchaeology 2013, an information portal dedicated to the international conference hosted by the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, 7.-8. November 2013 is now online. Find out more about the concept of the symposium, its topics and the preliminary schedule. Anyone interested the investigation of past human-environmental interactions is cordially inivited to attend the meeting and to enter into a cross-disciplinary dialogue between scientists from various subjects like Archaeology, Computer Sciences, Geography, Geoinformatics, History, etc. Besides stimulation of collaboration, common fields of work are to be identified and discussed from different scientific perspectives in order to better understand past relationships between man and environment and to protect cultural heritage.

Digital Geoarchaeology 2013 is affiliated with the Geographical Institue of Heidelberg University and the Insitute of Geography of University of Cologne. It is funded by the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

New geodata cluster – Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan region

A new cluster called GeoNet.MRN has recently been established in the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan region. Having its main focus on the surplus values of geodata, which have become  an essential part of everyday life be it with regard to business, information, or leisure, the network aims at bridging the gap between science, business and administration. Increase of knowledge transfer, support of eceonomic development and enhancement of innovational strenght are only some of the most prominent objectives.

GeoNet.MRN will officially kick things off on 22. November 2012 in Heidelberg, where the annual conference Fachaustausch Geoinformation will be held. Further information on both the cluster and the meeting can be found here.

Heidelberg Academy of Sciences – conference contest award for 2013 symposium

Dr. Christoph Siart and Dipl.-Geogr. Markus Forbriger rank among the winners of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences contest for conference funding. The proposal “Digital geoarchaeology: application of new technologies in interdisciplinary man-environmental research” was rated highly worthy of promotion by the decision committee. The symposium will be organized in cooperation with the Heidelberg Excellence-Initiative measure “Transcultural Studies” and held at the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities from 7.-9. November 2013.  It is part of a young researches funding concept that offers the unique opportunity to form a network of young international scientists from a broad range of disciplines. The conference contributions will be peer-reviewed and published in a special proceedings issue. Further details can be found on the conference website.
